Chapter Seven

The snap of a twig breaking had Jace and Louie bolting to their feet. Jace edged closer to Louie, wanting to shield him while he scented the air and peered into the surrounding foliage. Fuck, he was glad to be in wolf form. A faint whiff of someone other drifted toward him, and Jace’s hackles rose. He growled, low and long, the sound meshing with Louie’s warning.

Who the fuck’s there?

His first thought was that a full had wandered onto the compound, even though there were strict rules in place that fulls left shifters alone and vice versa. Long ago, so Jace had heard by listening to Sergeant and Dillon talking as he’d grown up, wolves and fulls had gotten together to lay down regulations and create laws that protected everyone from each other. But that scent… The smell of wolf as well as human invaded his nostrils via a sharp breeze that rattled the leaves, drowning out any footsteps if the intruder were walking closer.

Shit. Damn it.

He growled louder, contemplating sending out a distress call, but until he knew exactly what they were dealing with he reckoned it was best he waited. Maybe a full was with a wolf. Maybe they were friends and had wandered onto Highgate land by accident. They might not be from around here to know this was private property. Whatever excuse Jace may come up with didn’t change the fact that someone unknown had arrived at Highgate.

“No sense in growling, wolf,” a man shouted, his accent thick Texan.

That voice seemed to have come from where Vann had appeared the night before. And the man didn’t sound friendly. Didn’t sound like someone who had just ‘wandered’ here. If Jace had thought this could be resolved by simply asking the man to identify himself, he knew he was sorely mistaken. An angry visitor wasn’t something he’d ever had to deal with. Sergeant or Dillon had never been far away, and usually dealt with things like this—not that Jace could remember strangers being caught on the property before.

Unless Sergeant and Dillon shielded me from it.

“I got me a gun, wolf, and it’s trained right on one of you,” the man said.

Christ Almighty…

Jace’s instincts screamed for him to run. Until now, he hadn’t realized how sheltered his life had been. Guns and violence weren’t a common theme at Highgate. He’d had nothing to fear all his life.

Louie darted in front of Jace, but Jace switched their places instantly. There wasn’t time for a protective pissing contest, and he gave Louie the kind of growl where he’d hopefully understand what Jace meant— Stop messing around, remain alert. He nudged Louie with his ass, his way of saying Back up. On the left-hand side of the pond, high reeds swayed in the breeze. If he and Louie could just get there, they’d be somewhat shielded, especially if they hunkered down.

Slowly, they backed away—so slowly Jace hoped their movements wouldn’t be noticed at first. Jace remained just in front of Louie, but to the side so he could fling himself across the second he heard a gun go off.
